Here is some recent progress on the Russian Red portrait. Fixed some structure issues, defined the features a little and so on. I have already started color, and more will be up soon enough. Situating...

As I situate in my new place with my wonderful fiancee, I have many files on the external that need to be upped. This will be happening in the next couple weeks. For now, I figure this is easy enough to post as it is sitting right on my desktop. The final image will be posted soon enough, but this version is pretty close to completion.

This was a gift for a friend who was giving it as a gift to his brother for Christmas. It was really a lot of fun, as I was given basic criteria "It needs to have my brother" and "He needs to be riding Mazinger Z" and my favorite "It needs to be SUPER epic." The rest was faith in my creative freedom. It's not often in a designer/illustrator's development process that the higher up says "Hey, do what you want" so I took liberties. But overall, everyone involved was pleased. And I think I am, too. :)

I realize it's been a while, but I have a ton of new stuff on the way, especially as I finish up Christmas gifts. Those of course, will not be posted until the respective receivers actually receive them. ;) In the mean time, I'll be posting some brand new illos, and game art, along with some fantastic new blogsite remodeling and freshtodeath new branding and identity! I can't personally wait. How about you? :D

Here is the final lighting study for the environment. The array of colors at dusk is meant to give an almost unfamiliar feeling, like the sky before a tornado. Dust and spores riddle the sky. More on this project later. :)

I just recently saw the trailer for the Spike Jonze adaptation of my favorite childhood storybook by Maurice Sendak, Where The Wild Things Are. It inspired me again, just as it did then, to create something. This is dedicated to my mother, and all the early nights she sat and read me this story until I was dreaming of my own Wild Things. This is also dedicated to my brother, and his towel tail.

Since I would like to leave some of the imagination to the viewer, here are just a few conceptual developments from my hand in the 2009 Senior Thesis Exhibition. Victorian Steampunk subculture has always been something I've been more than excited about. The fact that our imaginative nature of a historical culture that our generation can relate to through what we've learned and read about and researched in history books can evolve in current times and take intricate elegance to an entirely new level simply amazes me. The incredibly and carefully crafted patterns, designs, and styles of clothing and decoration of the 19th century combine with technology crafted out of myth, powered by steam, gas, coal, and occasionally magic, to bring a very modern cultural entity to this otherwise less developed history. The excitement, imagination and whimsy of "Steampunkery" is fun and enjoyable for many people, and is also becoming more prominent as the days go by. Please enjoy!

PS: I don't claim to know Latin, so I apologize for offending the scholars with my post title. :D

FIRST DIGIPAK LAYOUT

This was done for a class, in which we had to take an artist that was randomly assigned to us (I cannot stress that part enough) and we had to illustrate a 4-Panel Digipak layout as well as promo pieces for it. I was assigned John Mellencamp's Dance Naked Album. Needless to say I had fun. I'm also happy it's over.

This is the first 2 and a half hours towards a recreation piece I am doing, where I am emulating a favorite illustrator of mine, Jason Chan. The exercise is so that I can understand some of the techniques he uses, and how he handles color. The piece is one he did for a Magic: The Gathering card titled "Steel of the Godhead". The image is copyrighted by him and Wizards of the Coast, and I am only using it as an educational tool, not to claim it as my own. "Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing." - Salvador Dali. I just hope the Chanman is more willing to take it as flattery, and not a chance to sue :D

Digitoil Experimentation

This was something I felt was almost a failed experimentation. It got awfully close to being scrapped, but I used it for another environment quick-rendering. This started as an oil painting, and added some texture to the hills using modelling grass. After that I sprayed it with a fixative, and scanned it, to work on it digitally. This was the result. 6 hours altogether, 1 hour just digital. I call it "Ascending the Plains of Lionheart Hill".

Not the happiest with it, not the best thing I've ever done, but I figure it still earned a spot on the ol' sketchblog. Enjoy it, anyways... big dump coming soon.

The pleasant freedom of Fall Break has already inspired peaceful environment renderings (along with the help of Ms. Leslie Feist). After witnessing some very ridiculous speed painting videos, I was inspired to challenge the quickness of my familiarity. I always feel productive when I paint quickly, especially knowing that there is a kind of usefulness to it for the concept design industry. Things have been great, and can feel that sense of calm resonate through my artwork. This one hour environment exercise is named "Staraflur" after one of my favorite Sigur Ros songs. Enjoy! :)

This week, I have a few little pieces for you to enjoy at your leisure. The first is an early Christmas keyframe. A hateful take on a loving character (he really exists), completely in Photoshop.
This next image is part one of a two part series titled "Wounded". This one in particular is titled "Wounded in Hatred". Photoshop, thanks to my hero Andrew Jones for some of the experimental elements.
This final image dump is a series of concepts for Infernal World, this being an armor set for the Grigori character.More to come... :D

As you can probably tell, I'm putting this sketchblog into a new mood and sense, so everything is pretty much in the process. I will, however, still be posting to it, for anyone out there who is interested in checking it out. Here are a couple new images.This is one of a series of headers and ads for the sketchblog, and I titled it "Acid Reflux". There will be a couple others done in the same style that will change every five, ten seconds. Look for it at the top of the page, and in my myspace. New tattoos going up there soon too.
This little gem I found this morning in the archives. This was the piece that ruined Corel Painter for me. It was the most stressful situation I had ever been in, and on top of the ridiculous amount of blending issues I had with this single piece for some reason, the colors are ass-backwards from the original, which happened when I exported it to Photoshop so that I could print it as a PDF. So, essentially, I cut out the middle man, gave up hope on Corel Painter, and took on Photoshop as a painting tool. Things have been turning out, so far :D.

Long Time Comin'

I haven't had a whole grip ton of time to post on here, with recent issues, working at the tattoo shop and with Forever Interactive, but since summer is coming to a quick close, I figured I would post some of the stuff I've been working on over the course of the summer. Eat it up :D

This is a work in progress that I just recently started, using some techniques taught to me by the impeccable Chris Metcalf (blog link to the right). I'm really enjoying it.

This is some work I've done for Forever Interactive, an up and coming Midwest game company. Greatest group I've ever worked with! The game is called Infernal World and I personally can't wait.

finaltreerotate.aviThis one was fun, I designed some foliage for an area, starting with the death progression tight sketches, and then moved forward to color environment paintings. From there, one of the 3D modelers in my department took my design and modeled it, after which, he unwrapped it and I painted a texture on top of it. The final rewrapped product amazed me, and I hope it amazes you too.

I'm still looking for some of the stuff, and trying to remember what I've all done this summer, so I'll continue to post. Keep in mind, too, that summer is not quite over just yet, so as I complete things, I'll post em here for feedback. Later!

ZBrush Experimentation

Hey there. I know it's been a little while but I've been working pretty diligently on schoolwork and I will soon be posting some of my latest character work. But for now I have some ZBrush work to share. I used the 2D tools in ZBrush for the basic shapes, and then exported to Photoshop, mirrored the image, and detailed it in painter. I plan on doing a few of these, so you can expect to see more. This one is called "The Divine Prophet". Enjoy.
PS: This type form of process is inspired by Andrew "Android" Jones and his Insomania thumbnails demo. Thanks Andrew for all you do and your passion for the art!
